- Case and design: The tape is encased in a robust and often unbreakable ABS plastic case. Different models may feature additional ergonomic enhancements, such as a bi-material case overmoulded with non-slip rubber for a more comfortable and secure grip.
- Tape blade: The blade itself is made of tempered carbon steel for durability and is typically coated with a protective material like “Dura Coat” or “Epoxy Based Scratch Guard”. This coating significantly increases the blade’s life and resistance to abrasion.
- Locking mechanism: Freemans tapes are available with different locking features, depending on the model:
- Auto-lock: The blade automatically locks in place as it is extended, allowing for hands-free measurements.
- Click-action lock: A button on the front of the case manually locks the tape in position.
- Pause button: Some models include a pause button for momentary holding before locking.
